how to remember a name {and the face that goes with it}

By Nicole · Comments (5)
Sunday, February 5th, 2012

I’m sure this has never happened to you..

You meet someone at a party or conference, you chat awhile, make small talk, even get somewhat acquainted. As they turn to walk away, their name spills out of your head like fine sand in an hourglass. Or better yet, you forgot it in the middle of your conversation.

Nope, I’ve never done that either…no siry. {ahem}

With all the excitement building for the upcoming Blissdom conference, I’ve been thinking about this little problem, so common to us human beings. I thought, Wouldn’t it be cool to remember these ladies names when I see them in a few weeks? Granted, name tags are worn almost full time, from my experience. But how good does it make you feel when someone remembers your name from a prior meeting or online interaction…when you’re not wearing a name tag? Pretty special, I’d venture to say.

Then I had a flashback. I learned a little trick one time, that I’d sort of forgotten about.

My first job fresh out of college was “Executive Assistant” to the pastor of a pretty good-size church in San Diego, CA. Really, it was a glorified title for “church secretary”.

One of the best things about that job was the pastor I worked for…a very godly, humble man who made every person he encountered feel special. He had a way of remembering a person’s name after just one meeting…and that was no small feat in a congregation of 750 regular attenders.

“How do you remember people’s names so effortlessly?” I asked him one day.

He began to explain to me that it wasn’t as “effortless” as it appeared…but still rather simple. Here basically what he told me…

1. Pay attention to the conversation. Don’t worry about what you’re going to say next (I never do that either…). Pay close attention to the details…where they are from, how many kids they have, if they have strikingly blue eyes. Some detail that “sticks out” to you.

2. Keep a notepad (real or virtual) handy. Very shortly after the conversation, while its still fresh in your mind, take a split second to jot down the person’s name and a few key details. Pull out a little note pad, or better yet, at a venue like Blissdom where business cards abound, jot that info down on the back of the card they just handed you. Or, whip at that iPhone and open Notes. Jot it down and act like you’re checking your email or making your next move with Words with Friends. 30 seconds and you’re done.

3. Review. Finally, sometime before you’re bound to encounter your new-found acquaintances again, take time to go over your handy notes. Try to put the name with the face with the details. Taking this extra time will pay off very soon.

Recently, I had a chance to put this little method to the test and it totally worked. I met a woman who has my middle name. I made a mental not (ok, I kind of skipped #2, but it was just one person and not 50 at the same time…). The next week, I saw her again and greeted her by name. She lit up. I was thrilled to be able to make the connection and make her feel that our interaction mattered.

Your Turn: What are your tips for remembering a person’s name? I’d love to hear!

10 tips for getting to bed on time

By Nicole · Comments (1)
Thursday, January 5th, 2012

This is me:

6:24 a.m. – Roll out of bed, nine minutes after hitting the snooze button once.

7:00 – First cup of coffee, throw on some clothes, first bus comes

7:17 – Second bus comes

8:01 – Third bus comes. Now to start my day.

9:00 to 12:30 – Feverishly work while its quiet

12:30 – Feeling sleepy because I stayed up working until 1:30 this morning. I’ll just take a quick cat nap…

2:30 – Get woken up by the first of the troops to come home

3:30 to 8:30 – Homework, make dinner, eat dinner, clean up dinner, read, showers, teeth brushing, flossing, kisses. Goodnight.

8:30 – Check a few more emails, work on tomorrow’s post

10:00 – I’ll just finish this one last thing…besides, I took a nice long nap so Im not tired at all!!!

11:00 – I really should go to bed.

1:30 a.m. – Im going to hate myself in a few short hours…

Am I the only one who does this insanity?? Im no expert but it just seems to me that you are naturally an “early bird” or a “night owl”. Im definitely the later.

There are countless benefits to being “early to bed” (…makes you healthy wealthy, and wise, right?). Not that my job lends itself to this philosophy…I know plenty of other mom bloggers and designers who do their best work at night, when its nice and quiet. But neither does an early morning school bus schedule lend itself to the night owl lifestyle. Overall, at the end of a week when I’ve been “early to bed”, I am just better…I feel better, I have more energy, my attitude is better, Im skinnier and richer.

Ok, that last part’s a lie.

The results are worth the effort. So here are a few tricks I’ve found that help me get my bootie in bed…and to actually fall asleep…that’s the goal, after all. Maybe they’ll help you too.

1. Set the alarm clock for bed time, not wake up time - I learned this from Dr. Oz. Genius! Set the alarm clock 8 hours before you need to wake up and go to bed when it goes off.

2. Stick with a routine - Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning…even on weekends. This one is a hard one for me, but it makes a huge difference in being able to fall asleep at a decent hour.

3. Create a ritual - Just like that sweet baby you train to sleep at night, set up a nightly ritual for yourself. Drink caffeine free hot tea, warm milk, take a bath, read a few chapters in your latest book. These cues help your body get ready for sleep.

4. Get as close to eight hour of sleep as you can - You dont need more than that, but you should ideally get that much. Not always realistic, I know, but seven to eight hours seems to be the magic number, say the experts.

5. Stop eating a few hours before bed time - Not only is this smart for a good night’s sleep, its smart for your waistline.

6. Walk/Exercise - When you’ve done nothing but sit all day, its hard to transition into feeling physically tired enough to go to bed (especially if you have a desk job). I find the days I’ve been out and about, have walked a few miles, or done some sort of exercise that my body is ready to go horizontal.

7. Dont nap! - Oh I love my naps, but they sabotage me at bedtime. Avoid the noon time siesta. Change things up after lunch…take a walk, make your phone calls, run your errands. It does wonders for taking your mind of nappy time.

8. Run through your “to done” list - While you’re trying to wind down and fall asleep, sometimes the worries and “to dos” for tomorrow keep your mind racing. I find it extremely helpful, and sleep inducing, to rerun the day…what I accomplished, the conversations I had, the meals I enjoyed. Before I get to  dinner time I’m usually sawing logs.

9. Time your medications accordingly - Sometimes medications can mess with your circadian rhythm and make it hard to be tired at night. Check with your doctor to see if you can take it at another time of day to get your body clock set correctly. I am hypothyroid and depend on thyroid medication to…well, live basically. I’ve noticed that certain thyroid medications kept me awake at night because of the way they metabolize. So I switched to taking them at night and it seemed to help. Or, it was all in my head but still worked anyway… :) .

10. Dont give up - Its so tempting to continue a bad sleep habit once it starts. But the quicker you can break the cycle, be tired for a short amount of time, the better you’ll feel in the long run.

Your turn: Are you a night owl or early bird? What are your tricks to going to bed at a decent hour?

Tucson Festival of Books

By Nicole · Comments (1)
Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Today I had the lovely honor of being an exhibitor at the Tucson Festival of Books on the campus of University of Arizona.

The topic? You guessed it, blogging.

More specifically, “5 Easy Steps to Starting a Blog”

The topics I desperately tried to squeeze into 15 minutes…scratched the surface on…discussed were…

  1. Answer the ‘Why’ Question
  2. Buy the Domain
  3. Choose A Platform
  4. Invest In A Design
  5. Make the Commitment

Those probably don’t make much sense if you didn’t hear my little schpeal, but then again it might sound a little familiar if you’ve read my blog for very long. That’s because it was derived from this post (and condensed down from 8 point to 5).

If you attended and are checking out this link for the resources I mentioned, here they are…as promised:

Bloggertunity: A Mom’s Guide to Blogging – An eBook written by my good friend, Stephanie Sheaffer, a very successful (Tucson!) blogger, that covers how to build an audience, monetize your blog, and much more.

Blogging Platforms
– A post I wrote comparing and contrasting the 3 major blog platforms.

W3Schools & Snoskred – Simple HTML Tutorials

Photo Editing Options – An overview of Photo Editors

Search Engine Optimization For Blogs – All about SEO by ProBlogger

So…happy blogging!

Kicking Off the Summer With Something New – “How To Blog: Video Tutor”

By Nicole · Comments (5)
Thursday, May 27th, 2010

UPDATE: There are some changes happening in these here parts. Because of a new opportunity, I am not able to invest the time I had planned to in adding to my video library. All videos are now free and available in past posts (simply search this blog for specific topics) or in upcoming posts. Enjoy!

The temperature gauge is on the rise.

Team sports are ending.

The school year is coming to a close.

Summer is upon us and for me that mean one thing…

3 restless, active boys at home for 8 weeks. But this year I’m a little more prepared than most. I have plans to do a whole lot of nothing and a whole lot of fun, all wrapped together. There will be a lot of swimming, Scrabble, cheap theater movies, a few day camps and I’m sure some Wii games. And maybe we’ll throw a few trips to the ice cream shop in there too.

So I may not be around quite as much, though I still plan on posting once a week. There may not be a lot of dissertation and discourse type posts, and probably no giveaways. But I’ll poke my head in here and there to say hi and let you know I’m still alive. I just have to soak up this time with these growing, changing-before-my-very-eyes boys.

I knew you’d understand.

But I cant go before telling you about a new and exciting feature on The Pixel Boutique. Let me give you a tiny bit of background.

As you know, I design blogs. This means working with a lot of different aspects of blogging…the graphics, the coding, the layout and template design on three different blogging platforms. I get tons of questions every week from bloggers and clients that need answers to some rubber-meets-the-road, mechanics of blogging questions. I wish sometimes I could just pop on over, sit down at the computer with them, and walk them right through it. Its so much easier to see it visually than to read it over email…for both of us.

In the past, I’ve done many free video tutorials and they generate a lot of views and interest. It’s clear to me that people want to know more about their blog and how to maintain and modify it, but they don’t know where to find quick, easy and thorough answers for the basic (and not so basic) questions they have.

So born out of that, I’ve decided to develop several video tutorials on many different topics. Without further ado…I present to you…

What’s in it for you:

  • Lessons on blogging with WordPress, Typepad & Blogger
  • Lessons on Photoshop Elements and other topics on graphics
  • How-to tutorials that you can play, pause, rewind, play again, etc.
  • A permanent file you can save and come back to in the future
  • Easy, step by step instructions as I do the process myself on screen or a minimal fee

What’s in it for me:

  • An easy way to cover a topic that would take 3 times as long to explain in an email
  • The satisfaction of knowing I’ve practically helped you
  • $3 per video

Yes, you read that correctly. Each video has an introductory cost of $3. Why, you ask? Well, it takes time to research the topic, create the video and, well…a girl can’t give away all she’s learned and studied over the years for nothing, now can she?

But, because I’m a nice gal, each new video added after today will remain FREE for one week before going into the for-purchase video library. And that’s not all (I hear infomercial music…)! If you buy multiple videos, you get the following discount:

  • Purchase any 3 videos = $8.25 (9% savings) – Enter 3VIDEOS at checkout
  • Purchase any 6 videos = $12 (17% savings) – Enter 6VIDEOS at checkout
  • Purchase any 10 videos = $24 (20% savings) – Enter 10VIDEOS at checkout

As you can see, I have a lot more topics to add…and more beyond what is listed. I welcome any suggestions for topics.

So check back often or subscribe to my RSS feed to be notified when new videos are added.

Happy blogging!

strollbutton

You know that commercial for bing.com, where everyone is rambling on nonsensically from one unrelated topic to another, emulating what happens when you get on the net and search a word or phrase? Im sure all of us can relate to that in some fashion. Even with my own blogroll, Twitter groups and the ever-important, specific search for “What does a tick bite look like”, its just all too much to take in.

Thank goodness for tools like StumbleUpon, Kirtsy, Tweetdeck groups. I also love when a few of my favorite bloggers post their highlights and finds on the web. It just helps to have a recommendation sometimes, doesn’t it?

That’s why today I’m starting a new series called “Stroll Around the Blogosphere”. Its my attempt to bring you helpful and interesting information that I’ve compiled for you, my readers, from around the blogosphere (and the web). So why would you want to read my recommendations, you ask? Well, if any of the following categories interest you, you’ll want to check it out:

  • The Basics of Blogging – Tips for the new or “still-contemplating” blogger
  • Every Blogger Should Know – Tips and tricks to make you a better blogger
  • For The Working Mother – Topics and resources for working mothers
  • So You Say You’re Not Artsy - Everything from photography to decorating…for the artistically challenged
  • You Name It – Anything else I find interesting!

So join me on Wednesdays and see if you don’t just find something new and wonderful. And if you have a blog post or stumble on a great article that you would like to have considered for my “Stroll”, please email me. I’d be happy to take a look!

Happy strolling…

The Truth About Type

By Nicole · Comments (0)
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Have you ever visited a blog and left early, simply because of the look? As a designer, I try not to be a “design snob” and pass judgement too quickly, but the overall look and readability of your blog is extremely important. Your blog’s first impression will be made (and your blog judged) in the first few seconds of a visit.

There are many factors to getting the best first impression out of your blog, one of which is the use of type.

Way back when in design school, we spent a whole lot of time on typography and the theories of best practices in using type. Tons of research has been done on what font, size, justification should be used when.

Here are a few tips for getting the most out of type on your blog.

1. Don’t center your posts. There is nothing harder to read than a large block of centered text. Small phrases or titles are fine, but not whole paragraphs. You tell me; which is easier on the eyes?

Typography is the art and techniques of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. Type glyphs are created and modified using a variety of illustration techniques. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and (kerning) adjusting the space between pairs of letters. [1]

The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and (kerning) adjusting the space between pairs of letters.

So do the blogosphere a favor and left justify your posts.

2. Pick a readable font. There are two types of font for the use of body copy: serif and san-serif. What is a serif, you may ask? Serifs are the little “feet” or extensions on a letter. Here’s an example.

This letter is a serif:

serif

This letter is a sans-serif (“without” a serif):

sanserif

Your best option for the body of your post is a readable font, either serif or sans-serif, such as Times, Helvetica or Arial. Not only are these readable fonts, they are all very common and probably installed on most computer systems. If you found a font you just loved so much that you had to use it, chances are good that it would be replaced with a default font on your visitor’s computer anyway. So stick with the web-safe, standard fonts and you will be loved. For more on standard web font, go here.

3. Use contrasting colors. Avoid using similar colors for your background and type, like blue on green. Often bloggers will use every color in the rainbow in their blog. Not only is it unappealing, but it is difficult to read. Stick with a light background with dark text or vise versa. You dont want to tire out the visitor’s eyes.

4. Use a readable font size. As I near 30 + 10, my eyes are definitely not what they used to be. I’m finding I squint at a lot of blogs. On whatever blog platform you are on, you control the font size on virtually every section. Choose a font size for your main blocks of text that is no smaller than 11 pts. That way you’ll be sure to not turn off your old mature experienced readers, like me. Trust me. You’ll be here sooner than you think. ;)

5. Be cohesive. There are literally hundres of thousands of fonts out there. And for some, its tempting to use all of them. But please, don’t. Between your titles, sidebar items and posts, try to be cohesive with your font faces. Don’t use too many different fonts on your blog. In this case, less is definitely more.
