Hope yours was too…
…and I’m nearly ready.
The tree is up, the cookies for the neighbors are made, and the presents are {almost all} bought and wrapped. The computer has been off, projects put on hold (I promise to be back in a week!), and the family festivities have already begun.
I hope this time of year is a meaningful, relaxing and joyful time for you and your family. I want to thank you, my readers and clients and casual visitors, for making 2011 such a pleasant and successful year for me. I love my job and the amazing people I meet through this little blog of mine. I have some fun things planned for the new year…
PS. Before I sign off for a few days and go drink more eggnog I wanted to share some exciting news. See that little brown button over there?

Yes, that one. Im thrilled and honored to be a part of Blissdom 2012 as a Community Leader! Are you going??
Home.
Such a simple yet profound and important word. Its a place and a state of mind. Its bricks and mortar, wood and glass. Its also acceptance and warmth, memories and safety.
This holiday will be spent at “home” and all the trimmings are coming together. The tree is up, the stockings hung, the lights outside are on timer.

Its a bit of a construction zone outside as we’re still building walls and planting trees and dreaming of future additions (and hoping for a swimming pool before it gets to be 1000 degrees again…). But we’ve got plenty of time since we plan on dying in this house.![]()

Inside (a.k.a. My Domain), I’ve been having fun pulling out decorations I havent seen for two years since we spent the holidays in Northern California last year.
One of my favorite places to get my creative on is the island in my kitchen. Not to brag or nothin’ but its enormous and beautiful and I love it to pieces. Its one of the features of this house that I fell in love with the first time I saw it.
I love to change out the “centerpiece” with different seasonal items to accompany the resident fruit bowl.

I was thrilled to find this birdcage (as in a real bird cage with a hinged top and small door). I got it from DownEast Basics Home and just filled it with some pinecones and frosted decorative fruit I had. Did you know DownEast Basics have a whole home decor store in addition to they’re fabulous clothing line? I didn’t, until recently.

The details are lovely and for $16.99 it was a great value, as are most things I saw in the catalog. I also bought this fun pinecone and bead garland to go with it…

(I had the white one already and just twisted them together)
I also had my eye on these…
DownEast Basics Home is hosting a “Spruce Up Your Home for the Holidays” sweeps on their Facebook page between now and Dec 9 and givng away a $500 holiday home makeover to one lucky winner! I entered because I think I could enjoy spending $500 (on my bedroom, mainly) on decor. Yep, pretty sure I could do that.
You should enter too. Go now…its really easy. Just a 1 question survey.
Happy holiday decorating…I’ll be back in a few weeks with more photos (as a part of The Nester’s 2011 Christmas Tour of Homes!).
UPDATE: The winner of this giveaway is #10, Niecey!
Do you remember these?
This is a friendship bracelet I made as a middle schooler a trillion too many just a few years ago. Its now faded and smashed in the pages of an old scrapbook.
But how fun were those to make? I had forgotten the “technique” until I tried it again on the My Friendship Bracelet Maker. In the Olden Days, we did it by hand. But girls these days, they are so sophisticated…
![]()
My Friendship Bracelet Maker came into being when David Crorey, an inventor in Michigan watched his granddaughters making friendship bracelets. David’s philosophy was “Give me an everyday problem and I’ll invent a solution”. So he did.
There’s also a Ribbon Barrette Maker (made plenty of those too, back in the day…)

And the fun isnt just for girls either. Boys can get into the fun with the less “girly” Clip Board…

My Friendship Bracelet Maker retails for $19.99 and is intended for children 6 and up. The MyFBM.com website has great video tutorials and oodles of patterns (they’ve come a long way since my day…). You’ll find them at Michaels, Toys R Us and Hobby Lobby among other places nationwide.
WIN IT! One lucky winner will receive their product of choice from the MyFBM.com website. Enter below by doing any or all of the following (please leave a separate comment for each):
Giveaway ends December 12 at 11:59 pm MST.
Its been a little over 12 hours since waking up at the crack of 2 a.m., throwing on my beanie and gloves and quietly tiptoeing out of the house. I was going to do it. For the first time I was going to be one of the crazies on Black Friday.
The first time…and most likely the last.
Let me tell you my experience…
On Thanksgiving, after stuffing my face beyond all reason, I scoured the Black Friday ads and narrowed my plan of attack down to three stores…Kohl’s Target, and Walmart. I had a specific list of items I wanted from each store and I even went as far as to map out my route as best I could for each store.
Well. What’s the saying…”the best laid plans”? Let me just sum up the experience for each store…
Kohl’s opened at 3 a.m. (across the country, I think). They had over 400 early bird specials which really were some pretty good deals. I arrived at 2:30 a.m. and the line wrapped around the building on both sides. All at once, the doors flew open and people rushed in, scattering to their destinations. The problem was, there were so many people you couldn’t even move in the aisle, let alone find the things you wanted. Once I found the first thing I was going for, I realized the checkout line was wrapped around the store isles, overlapping in the back. It would have taken another hour at least to checkout. With only one item in my hands, the need to use the little girl’s room badly, and a tight schedule to keep, I did what any savvy shopper would do. I bailed (after visiting the little girl’s room).
What they did right:
What they could have done better:
Target was my next stop. Being held up at Kohl’s (just trying to leave…) I was late getting there. The line this time wrapped all the way around the back of the store into the loading dock. I thought for sure it was going to be a repeat of the Kohl’s fiasco. And it was a little nutty inside, but I was able to get about half the things on my list and met the nicest lady in the looong checkout line. It ended up being a great thing because we held each others place in line as we went off to other areas to find more loot. Yet again, no carts, so it was whatever you could carry.
What they did right:
What they could have done better:
Oh Walmart. I would have avoided you all together, honestly, if it wasn’t for one major purchase. First of all, the parking lot was a zoo, but that’s just the nature of my local store. I ended up not getting what I went for because of a misleading ad. This was the first year (so I was told by an associate) that Walmart opened at midnight but only had their Black Friday deals start at 5 a.m. Confusing? I know.
So I showed up shortly after 5 a.m. when my “non door buster but still a great deal” item was supposed to go on sale (per the ad) only to be told that it had sold out shortly after midnight. My bad? No. Walmart’s poor communication and advertising. Oh well. I probably wouldn’t have made it anyway, but still…the whole sales schedule seemed very confusing.
What they did right:
What they could have done better:
I guess I’m just not willing to battle for a parking space, stand in lines for hours and purchase only that which I can carry because all the carts are gone…that’s if I can find it…just to save a buck. If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn’t. Ok, that’s probably not true because I’m a sucker for a sale. But I would:
So tell me, what was your Black Friday experience?

UPDATE: The winner of this giveaway is #2, Chrysa!
There was a time when trying to get a decent Christmas picture of three boys at the same time was too much for this mommy to handle. I resigned myself to the fact that someone would be looking away, pinching someone else or picking their nose.
But now with the ability to leverage cell phone and video game privileges, its not half bad.
Oh, there might be a few to sift through to find that perfect shot…

Hello from year-round-school land. Yes that’s right…mere weeks after the rest of the country started school, we began our first break. A three week break at that. There are no big trips planned; we’re saving that for Christmas. Nonetheless, you may not see me posting much over the next couple of weeks. We’ll be busy swimming, watching Netflix movies and other such frivolity.
But I did want to let you know about my new baby. This one doesn’t cry or spit up…I had three of those already. This one has been gestating for about 5 years. Here’s a little background…
I began sending “virtual” Christmas cards about 9 years ago. By virtual, I mean I would create the graphics, write some html code and email the link to all our family and friends on the Christmas list. Sometimes it would be similar to a slide show, sometimes it would have music. It was fun and easy and pretty unique.
Each year I would always get asked, “Where did you get that done??” So I started to think of a simple way to make it available for other people.
After a lot of time and thought and prototypes, the Holiday Blog Card was born. Powered by Blogger, the Holiday Blog Card lets you send a customized design with as much information as you want to everyone on your holiday list…and then some. Because its basically a blog, you can share the link on your blog, Facebook, Twitter, anywhere. And if you wanted to send it in conjunction with a traditional card or letter, you can include the link in your card and have people visit for an even more extended yearly update on your family.
So you probably have some questions…well I have some answers.
What do I get with the Holiday Blog Card?
You will end up with a fully functional (and editable) Blogger blog that doubles as your Christmas/holiday card. It includes the design of your choice (4 designs available) with the homepage featuring your family picture and a short greeting. Then you can choose to have up to 6 inner pages…perhaps one for each member of the family, with space for one photo and text following.
Can I see a demo?
Sure! Check this out…
What are the benefits of using the Holiday Blog Card? A few are…
What’s the cost?
From now until November 5th, the introductory cost is $55! (the cost of less than 2 boxes of Christmas/holiday cards)
Interested? Then check out the site for the 2010 designs and for all the details. Its not too early to start planning for the holidays. If your house is like mine, it will be here faster than you can say “Holidays? They’re here already??”
