loew’s ventana canyon: good for the soul(mate)

By Nicole · Comments (2)

Marriage is hard.

Am I telling the truth?

I dont care if you are soul mates, been going steady since the 5th grade or met on eHarmony, its hard work. And even when things are good and you’re madly in love, the daily stresses of life and outside forces make it hard on any couple to stay in love. Or maybe its just me. But probably not.

That’s why Husband and I try to be very intentional with set aside time for just us. We have our weekly breakfast or lunch date on Mondays (day off) and we try to do something special each year on our anniversary.

This year, we decided to stay close to home to celebrate our 19th, but we still wanted to get away…as in, leave kiddos (aka: man-children who are probably technically old enough to be left alone…but are you kidding me?? 3 boys left unattended for 2 days??) with grandma.

There are plenty of nice resorts to choose from in Tucson, but just about the time we started planning our escape, I saw a LivingSocial discount for a deluxe room, bottle of champaign, and half off up to two spa treatments at Loew’s Ventana Canyon. We have stayed here before, but it had been about 10 years since we visited.

Loew’s Ventana does an amazing job preserving the natural beauty of the Sabino Canyon surroundings while totally indulging your senses. There are pathways leading to waterfalls and quiet little nooks. There’s plenty of outdoor surroundings to keep you occupied.

And if you want to stay put and hull up, you’ll be pretty comfy doing so. Our bathtub was the size of a small swimming pool and the setting was warm and relaxing. Our balcony faced the city and was breathtaking.

I took advantage of the fitness room and spa. I had a 50 minute aromatherapy massage that I would like to repeat every day of the week, yes please and thank you. It was divine. The spa was beautiful and fully stocked with everything I needed before and after my visit. The staff was courteous and friendly.

Our visit, in a word, was indulgent. It hit all the right spots. It was so nice to just relax and eat too much and spend some quality time catching up. We will recommend Loew’s Ventana to our friends and will be back some day ourselves.

Your turn…what do you do to “fireproof” your marriage (if you are married…)

The Ups and Downs Called LIFE

By Nicole · Comments (5)
Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Want a dose of self-exposure? Well here you go.

In the span of a couple of weeks, our family has experienced several ups and downs.

A DOWN – The jaw dropping piece of mail announcing that our property tax was going to quadruple from last year. It wasn’t all a shock, since we just moved into our house and the land was the only thing assessed last year. But quadrupling? Reeeeeeeally?

For some strange reason, I suddenly felt like an adult, in a whole new and different way.

An UP – Hubby and I had the overwhelming privilege of baptizing our 9 year old, the youngest of our three, this past Sunday. We strongly believe in letting our kids initiate this decision. They were never christened or baptized as babies because we want them to come to the decision on their own, when they’re ready.

Our church does baptisms differently than any other church I’ve attended. They let mentors or parents who are Christ followers do the baptizing. Its was an extremely humbling and meaningful moment.

A DOWN – In a backlash decision, the Chief of Police in our town decided that Hubby’s entire unit was to be cut (he still has a job, just an up-in-the-air, very different one). This is a bad move in my (and so many other’s) opinion. The units they are cutting are the proactive, community building units that businesses and schools love to have present. With the “proactive” element missing, that just leaves the less desirable “reactive” policing.

I know our Chief feels his hands are tied, and it feels like the gross mismanagement of funds is being repaid on the backs of the blue collar, under-appreciated men and women who put their lives on the line every. single. day. Oh, how I could go on and on and ON about this subject. But I won’t. And I’ll try to continue to focus on how blessed my family is. I know we have it so good when so many others face far worse.

It just stinks to be at the mercy of politics. Really stinks.

An UP – Aforementioned hubby and I celebrated 18 years of marriage this weekend.

Just typing that makes me feel old. Still feels like we’re dating. And I guess that’s a good thing…given the ups and downs called life. Its not always a bed of roses, is it? I thank my lucky stars I have someone like him to walk through this life on earth with.
