The desert is a unique place to live. You have to be a bit of a surviver to live there. Its an atmosphere of extremes. Extreme heat, extreme terrain, and unfortunately, extremely vile insects. But in that, there is also extreme beauty, if you’re willing to just see it.
I’ve lived in Tucson for 14 years now and being a California cost girl, it was quite a transition for me. The things that I hated at first are now some of the reasons I love my desert life. I love the dry. I love the sunsets. I love the mountain ranges completely surrounding the city. I love the culture and history. And dare I say, I even love the heat and can appreciate (I cant quite say ‘love’) tarantulas.
Last week I discovered a gem in the city that I’d never know about before through a media event sponsored by Tucsontopia, the go-to resource for all things Tucson. Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch is one of the oldest establishments in Tucson at 85 years old. Nestled up against the Catalina mountains, the Guest Ranch was a boarding school for girls in the 1920s. Now it is a beautiful getaway with 30 luxurious guestrooms, suites, and private casitas sprawling 34 acres. Each room has free high-speed internet access, robes and much much more.
The Grill, Hacienda Del Sol’s onsite dining venue is the recent winner of the AAA Four Diamond Restaurant Award. It features an extensive and eclectic wine list of over 1400 labels and 10,000 bottles and chefs create an innovative yet approachable menu using herbs from the hotel’s own garden.
The Mister and I have a 21 year anniversary coming up this Fall and we’ll definitely be visiting The Grill…and maybe even splurging on an overnight stay. Its a perfectly romantic getaway. If you’re looking for a good way to experience desert life, come visit the Hacienda Del Sol. And if you’re in the Tucson area, check out The Grill for a delectable local dining experience!
