Today starts a new series I’m calling “A Girl’s Guide to Photoshop Elements”. That’s right, you don’t have to have a degree in graphic design or spend hours reading a manual to add a little somethin somethin to your blog. I’ve got you covered.
In this first set of videos, I’ll introduce you to the user interface of Photoshop Elements 8. I’ll be posting one video per week over the next several weeks and cover most everything you need to know to get a good handle on using Photoshop Elements to enhance the look of your blog. Then, I’ll do more videos covering specific techniques.
Want a sneak peak? Here’s a few of the things I’ll be covering after the initial introduction videos…
- Adding a watermark to your photos
- Special photo effects
- Resizing/Optimizing images
- Creating a photo collage
- Using Photoshop Elements 9 (hopefully…)
Have a suggestion for a topic? Please speak up in the comments below!
So lets get started! Here is the first introduction video on using Photoshop Elements…enjoy!

I am going to love this series. I had been using Photoshop Elements, versions 1 & 2, for years because I knew the software and was too cheap to upgrade.
Last week I finally upgraded to version 9 and I’m ready to learn.

I’m so intimidated by Photoshop and know absolutely nothing about it. But, I was wondering if you could help me with this…my 15 year old daughter has just started to show a real interest in photography. She is definitely a beginner but I would love to be able to get her a decent camera and some Photoshop software for Christmas. I don’t even know where to begin. Could you possibly recommend what I should be looking for? It seems like there are so many versions and such of Photoshop and I can’t spend a fortune, but want something that will ease her into photography as well as something she will be able to use for awhile. Thanks!

That’s a great question, Kari. And I’d recommend starting her with the latest version of Elements (9). You can pick it up cheap at Costco sometimes, and its also available on Amazon for as low as $75. Its a great place to start and if she really gets serious, she’ll eventually want to upgrade to the full version of Photoshop.
There are tons of resources on the web, but also recommend seeing if her high school offers photography as an elective, or having her join the yearbook team. They may give her some pointers there and its always easier learning in person than from a book or tutorial.
Hope that helps…thanks for asking!
