destiny

When I was ten, I got a typewriter for Christmas.

Odd, you say? Not to me. Well, maybe the fact that I also got the powder blue “Country Girl” bike, complete with finders and a banana seat, helped that year… (see it there on the left?).

My dad found a somewhat antique and working Underwood Leader from the 1930s.

Growing up, I was the youngest of four by over 6 years and an only child by the time I was 10, with everyone going to college and moving out on their own. We lived out in the middle of nowhere (so it seemed as a child) and there were no neighborhood kids…nary a one. So, I spent a lot of time playing alone…playing make believe.

But it wasn’t Nurse or Teacher…or even Mommy. It was Office. Yes, complete with a company name and a date stamp (…I somehow acquired from my father’s real office). I hollowed out a corner in the downstairs basement, surrounded by a stand up piano, storage boxes and old printing presses.

It was perfect.

My company was called “The & Sign”. Don’t know why…don’t even remember what services I offered. I was happy just typing up super-official documents and counting all the nickels in my petty cash (I collected them because they were just like my name…get it?).

Maybe it was my self-employed dad’s influence, maybe its was always a part of my propensity and personality, maybe it was destiny. But despite temporary distractions along the way, I somehow ended up doing what I loved from the start…communicating, entrepreneuring, creating.

It now sits on my desk, next to my Mac Book Pro…a link to the past…my past.

As I mother my own children, I’m now at the stage where I sit and wonder…what will they become? Will they do what’s right and good? Will they be happy? I pray I foster, encourage, expose and teach them enough to help them find their destiny.

bloggy freebie: elegant social media icons

By Nicole · Comments (13)
Monday, March 28th, 2011

I love giving away stuff…in the form of giveaways, tutorials and fun little things you can use for your blog.

So today, how about some pretty, girlie social media buttons for your blog or website?

Download:

You can download this set of icons in png file format here.

How to Use:

The beauty of png files is that they can be easily modified by color, size, transparency, etc. So, the same Facebook file above can be modified in a photo editor like Photoshop or on PhotoBucket.com to look like this:

How to modify the color In Photoshop Elements:

1. Open the png file.

2. Go to Enhance>Adjust Color>Adjust Hue/Saturation. Use the sliders to change the hue, saturation and lightness.

3. Click Ok, then save the file.

…In Photoshop:

1. Upload the png file.

2. Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation. Use the sliders to change the hue, saturation and lightness.

3. Click Ok, then save the file.

…On PhotoBucket.com:

1. Upload the png file.

2. In the album, hover over the image and select Edit. Then select Adjust and use the sliders to change the hue, saturation and lightness.

3. Click Done.

The default size of the icons is pretty large at 200x200px. That will give you plenty of wiggle room for sizing appropriately for your blog. Typically, an icon will be around 50x50px and you can resize in your photo editor or when you upload to your blogging platform.

Any questions? Speak up! And enjoy… ;)

momin’ it forward at ben’s bells

By Nicole · Comments (2)
Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

There’s lots of ugliness in this world.

And sometimes its so good to be reminded to simply be kind.

Yesterday I joined with some local Tucson bloggers and other ladies for an event sponsored in part by Mom It Forward.

We met at Ben’s Bells, an organization whose sole purpose is to spread kindness.

Born out of the death of little two year old Ben, this simple project aims to spread kindness and brighten a day by hanging bells all around Tucson to be found and claimed by anyone lucky enough to encounter them.

It was a treat.

Thanks to the following sponsors for making this even wonderful…

  • Tucson Creative Catering
  • Big Frog Custom T-Shirts Tucson
  • Gadabout Salon Spas
  • Arizona Pest Control
  • Living My Moment
  • Kelly’s Thirty-One Gifts

You can follow Ben’s Bells on Facebook and Twitter.
