How to Add a ‘Link To Me’ or ‘Grab My Button’ Badge

By Nicole · Comments (23)
Friday, July 31st, 2009

As a new blogger, I was overwhelmed by all the lingo; RSS, widgets, badges, blogroll, etc. and so on. Admit it, bloggers. We have our own language. (Note to Self: write a post entitled “Bloggy Definitions” very soon).

Anywho, if you’ve been scurrying around the blogosphere at all, you’ve come across blogs that display the code for their blog button, or badge. This is sometimes called a “link to me”  or “grab my button” badge or button. Here, the code to add the button is displayed so people can copy it into their own sidebar. And adding this feature to your blog couldn’t be easier.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  1. Hopefully you have a 125×125 pixel button created for your blog. This is the standard size that fits nicely in most sidebars. First, upload your button to your blog or photo hosting account (such as PhotoBucket). Take note of the photo URL (the address where your button “lives”. It will look something like this: http://www.yourblogname.com/2009/07/yourbuttonname.jpg). Here’s mine:tpb125x125
  2. In your blog dashboard, be it TypePad, WordPress or BlogSpot, create a new text sidebar widget/gadget. You will be adding your own HTML code here.
  3. Now, insert the following code in the text widget, inserting your information in place of the red text:Link to me:
    <br /><br />
    <img src=”http://www.yourblogorservername.com/2009/07/
    yourbuttonname.jpg
    ” />
    <br /><br />
    <textarea rows=”3″ cols=”20″>
    <br>
    <a href=”http://www.yourblogname.com“>
    <img src=”http://www.yourblogorservername.com/2009/07/
    yourbuttonname.jpg
    ” />
    </a>
    <br>
    </textarea>
  4. And that’s it! Click save and view your handiwork. The one thing you may want to fiddle with is the “rows” and “cols” numbers. They are just what they sound like…the number of rows and columns of text in the code. So, if you want more horizontal rows, or lines, bump that number up. If your text/code area is expanding beyond the width of your sidebar, change the “cols” number to something less than 20 until it fits.

I hope this was helpful…and simple. Check back in the next couple of weeks for a tutorial on creating that blog button, if you dont already have one (or you can always contact me to create one for you!).

Take A Stroll With Me

strollbutton

You know that commercial for bing.com, where everyone is rambling on nonsensically from one unrelated topic to another, emulating what happens when you get on the net and search a word or phrase? Im sure all of us can relate to that in some fashion. Even with my own blogroll, Twitter groups and the ever-important, specific search for “What does a tick bite look like”, its just all too much to take in.

Thank goodness for tools like StumbleUpon, Kirtsy, Tweetdeck groups. I also love when a few of my favorite bloggers post their highlights and finds on the web. It just helps to have a recommendation sometimes, doesn’t it?

That’s why today I’m starting a new series called “Stroll Around the Blogosphere”. Its my attempt to bring you helpful and interesting information that I’ve compiled for you, my readers, from around the blogosphere (and the web). So why would you want to read my recommendations, you ask? Well, if any of the following categories interest you, you’ll want to check it out:

  • The Basics of Blogging – Tips for the new or “still-contemplating” blogger
  • Every Blogger Should Know – Tips and tricks to make you a better blogger
  • For The Working Mother – Topics and resources for working mothers
  • So You Say You’re Not Artsy - Everything from photography to decorating…for the artistically challenged
  • You Name It – Anything else I find interesting!

So join me on Wednesdays and see if you don’t just find something new and wonderful. And if you have a blog post or stumble on a great article that you would like to have considered for my “Stroll”, please email me. I’d be happy to take a look!

Happy strolling…

Design Focus: Will Run For Cake

willrunforcake

At BlissDom last year, I met a very delightful lady named Pam. The first thing that struck me was her friendly personality. The second thing, her quick wit. And the third thing, her blog name. With a name like Will Run for Cake, is there any doubt what she writes about? Clever!

Pam and I started working on her blog design, hosted on WordPress.com,  and came up with a clean, simple design illustrating the dual love of running and…well, cake. You’ll love Pam’s sense of humor and perspective on a topic we ladies often take too seriously. “Run” on over and check her out.

Its Been A While, But I’m Back In The Saddle Again. (I Feel A Song Coming On…)

Boy, oh boy. If there’s one word to describe my life in the past two months it would be “abnormal”. Or “changed” or anything to do with “different-than-before”. If you read this blog at all, you’ll know that there have been just a few things going on in my personal life…all good things, but change nonetheless. Want to recap (Warning: Mother of all updates ahead…)?

May 11: Meet with realtor, take the plunge, put house of 7 years on the market and put an offer on the dream house.

May 14: Husband has second work related shoulder surgery. Comes through swimmingly.

May 16: Sell house to sweet young couple just starting their family and buying their first home. Don’t even have time to stage it for selling. (I’m not complaining.) Pack, sign papers, try to keep things like work projects, homework, end of school year activities rolling as usual, pack some more, sign more papers, rent a storage unit.

May 22: School’s out for the summer. Oh no, now what?

June 15: Move out of house…become temporarily homeless. Thank goodness for Grandma. Stay with her for 3 weeks while new house is finished. Swim everyday…sometimes twice a day. Not bad for temporary housing.

June 20: Work with some very patience clients who stick with me through internet connection up and downs. A few to mention and thank:

La Jolla Mom

Check out her sweet new digs, especially if you live in the La Jolla, CA area. She’s got the low down!

Heather needed a button for a new series she’s doing called Makeover Mondays. Check it out and share your make over stories!

June 28: Dig Social Security card out of storage unit to prove to the bank I am who I say I am. Ready to offer first born as well, if needed.

June 30: Make my mark on the new driveway (before it was officially ours…oops).

July 2, 11:00 a.m.: After several delays, faxes, phone calls, and a few tears, finally close escrow!

July 2, 8:30 p.m.: Pull out of town in the rain for an overnight, 16 hour drive to Northern California for previously planned family reunion/vacation.

July 2-10: Soak up every ounce of fun in Monterey, CA.

family-portraitMy brother, the photographer, took our family portrait. I can not believe everyone (plus dog) is smiling and acting normal.

July 11: Come home, time to move! Of course its the hottest weekend of the Summer thus far. A mere 109 degrees. Can’t believe our friends still like us after that. Love the new house, so much to do. Choke on price tag for covering 19 windows.

moving-day-hot-summerDoes this lovely picture say it all??

July 13: Start noticing strange drainage “happenings”.

July 17: Drainage “happenings” escalate to “issues”. Call builder.

July 18: Previously planned out-of-town guests arrive for the weekend!

July 20: Year-round school starts, guests return home, drainage “issue” resolved. Wont go into the gory details, but lets just say it involved several plumbers, county officials, miscommunication, and a backhoe. I can once again flush my toilets with peace of mind.

July 21: First day back to a normal work day! I’m so ready for life to settle down again. Thanks for sticking with me, dear internet friends. Its good to be home.

Now back to work…ready to get down to business on some fun upcoming blog projects. Need a blog design, Twitter page or button? Step on up! I’m ready for ya.
